Swan River Valley Prayer Requests – July 8/26

Basement destroyed by flooding

Thank you for continuing to pray for people experiencing flooding in the Swan River Valley, and also in the Dauphin/Ochre River area.

The most recent flooding last week impacted several people from Temple Baptist Church in Swan River.

Prayer Requests:

  • Water’s Edge Bible Camp has had to suspend summer camp this summer as access to the camp is not possible given the flooding.
  • Mental health. Judy Hart from First Baptist Church in Minitonas reminded us this week of not just the physical challenges facing those in the Swan River Valley but also the mental challenges. The challenges that come with so much disruption, destruction and such a long road to recovery. People have lost everything and have to deal with the stress of waiting to hear if insurance or the government will help. Or the challenge of reconciling why one block flooded while another was spared. In one instance one Sister had her room destroyed in the basement while the other sister had her room remain untouched upstairs.
  • Safety. There are numerous hazards that come with flood cleanup, thankfully there have only been minor incidents, but please pray for the safety of those working to clean up and rebuild.
  • The Oasis Thrift Store in Minitonas. As an outreach ministry of First Baptist Church in Minitonas The Oasis has provided affordable clothing to those in the Minitonas area. Sadly their building was flooded in the initial flooding and looks like the building might not be salvageable. Pray for the future of The Oasis and those involved with the ministry.
  • Wisdom for church leaders to know how best to support, love and share the Gospel with those in their community. Specifically pray for Pastor Kevin at FBC Minitonas as leads after having his home flood. and Pray for Pastor Keith as he started in his position as Lead Pastor at Temple Baptist Church in Swan River on July 1st, pray that he would be able to hit the ground running in the midst of this unprecedented event.

Praise Items

  • Samaritan’s Purse has been able to work in the community helping to assess damage and beginning the process of cleaning up.
  • New Faces on Sunday mornings. Several community members have started coming to church on Sunday at the invitation of Samaritan’s Purse workers.

Ways to Help

  • Samaritan’s Purse has clarified their need. they are looking for a dozen volunteers. The direct link to Samaritan’s Purse’s sign up form can be found here.
  • First Baptist Church Minitonas is also accepting donations both to help rebuild their building and parsonage as well as to help meet needs in the community. You can e-transfer to fbcminitonas@outlook.com. In the message box please:
    • Include your address if you would like a tax receipt
    • Indicate “Capital Fund” if you are donating to help rebuild the church or “Benevolence” if you want to help meet needs in the community.
